Why Part-Time Employees are Critical Components of a Company

There are three reasons why part-time employees are as good as full-time employees. And why it would be more than a trend.

Employers are looking at an era, where an employee of various skills is highly prized. Recruiters are challenged to find one, but it doesn't mean that the search is like looking for a missing item in the desert. They can look for applicants who are seeking part-time opportunities, and no two part-timers have the same set of skills. This leads to the next advantage (of having part-time employees). A task must be done right away. There's a higher chance that a small group of part-timers can do it faster than a full-timer or two. It's all about the numbers, who happen to be efficient in what they are doing. Last but not the least, budget would always be an issue. A part-time employee should solve the problem.

The recession (of the 1990s) have prompted lots of people to become part-time employees voluntarily. It won't be the case nowadays, as the number would remain steady for years. One out of ten Americans to be exact. It would be a personal choice for these Americans, and the number could change next decade. Those who want to be part timers like self control, which would mean the time for things not related to work. The upside also means that there's a downside. It can be analyzed constructively. though. Call it a trial period between employer and part-time employees.

Problems That Could Arise from Part-time Work

Less or more? There would be an applicant who has more extensive experience over the other applicants, who wants a higher salary for a 20-hour working week. If you're the boss, then the sensible solution should be seeking an applicant who is willing to settle with less. There may be several pitfalls, among which would be a part-time applicant falling below expectations. It might be better to look at the situation on the bigger picture. Do you want the company to prosper? Do you prefer a lean team? Are you looking at an efficient team? If you answer to the affirmative, then you must be willing to make an investment on a part-timer with (extensive) experience. This leads to the next question.

Is it legal? Those who are unfamiliar with the set-up would wonder if part-time employees also receive the same benefits as full-timer employees. It should depend on what have been discussed between both parties after the interview. This could be the opportunity for you, the employer, to think outside of the box. You can discuss to the chosen candidate (for the part-time job) about other benefits (if the salary won't be enough). Performance bonus, on a monthly basis, should be reasonable enough. Flexible schedule would appeal to everyone. Applicants could ask about other benefits, but it would be better to do a research. Be prepared for it.

Hidden assets? This wouldn't be a big deal unless you, the employer, would intend it. You have nothing to lose if you make public about it. The number of part-time employees would go up on a steady rate, as more people like the idea of being their own boss. It could be due to personal reasons (like juggling work and family), it could also be an employee trying to maximize his (or her) potentials. And this should be the right set-up. Besides, any attempt to hide it might not sit well with full-time employees.

What a Part-Time Employee Must Know

If you’re an employee who needs an additional source of income, then a part-time job would appeal the most. There are cases when necessity should force some people to have three part-time jobs, which makes you wonder if such people come from another planet. It may not be a case of fulfillment, as they may have children. And the needs of some are greater than the others. It would still come to personal satisfaction sooner or later. There’s another thing, though.

You’re no different from a full-time employee, so you must show your worth. You must give your best effort despite the circumstances. You must be willing to coordinate with other part timers. This would be the only way to build your brand, which should gain your employer’s trust. If this won’t be good enough for your resume, then expect the word of mouth to give you more opportunities.

It may also be wise to focus on your specialty. You must be the best in this kind of job, which might prompt your employer to promote you to a full-time employee. And it would be foolish to pass it up. (Think about career development. Don’t pass up the possible opportunities.) If you insist on a part-time set-up, then you might have to consider the possibility of adding another skill. It must be on a part-time basis unless you want to go back to college (and learn more about it).
