What Must a Good Workplace Look Like in 2019?

It's a brave new world, which wouldn't allude to a reading list (from your college days). More and more professionals prefer remote work, and a background check would highlight diversity. Let's see if both could result to a good workplace.

The old (working) days are notable for the 9-5 schedule, and a strict adherence to dress code. If you're a fan of "The Office", then you might wonder how employees handle the humdrum. They might have grown with Stan Lee, they may not. They would look forward to the small tube, a novelty during that time. And the Space Race could have reduced the idle time significantly. They might have a different, if not interesting, opinion on Damien Chazelle's depiction of this exciting period, but don't tell them about the flexible (working) schedule. It's a reality, which may (or may not) make a good workplace. After all, there are other variables to think of.

Truth (or Myth) about a Good Workplace

Relaxed atmosphere. Your version of a relaxed atmosphere would be a beanbag with a laptop on one end and a Persian cat on the other. Ernst Stavro Blofeld may have inspired you, but the reality would be far from what you've been wishing for. Some may want space, which could make them more productive during working hours. (Walking would help when work becomes stressful.) There are others who must tap on their competitive side. (A monthly incentive could motivate them.) A relaxed atmosphere may be subjective, but it's not. If there's open communication, then assurance should follow (from there). It may lead to a friendly environment, but it doesn't matter if it doesn't. (You're not supposed to look for new friends in the office, but it happens one way or the other.) It's all in the mind, so expect positive vibes (and nothing else).

Teamwork. If the company has a vision, then teamwork wouldn't be a dream at all. It may not be the case at all, as it comes down to the employees. It could prompt some to ponder on values. A good attitude would go a long way, and doors should open on those who have qualities that most people admire about. These are the traits that could make a diverse organization take off. There are cultural differences, that may lead to bumps. It shouldn't hinder them from reaching the goal. A relaxed atmosphere may help, but it would cover a certain distance. A goal must not be compromised, yet you would think of the next one (in this short list).

Commitment to excellence. This could be the motto of companies, but actual events may (or may not) be a hindrance. In this regard, an employer (or manager) must be perceptive enough, if not get to know the people to work with. It might be compared to walking on a tight rope. (Office politics shouldn't be far behind.) Location would be another factor to think of. Any employee working from a remote place wouldn't have a problem with this one particularly those who embark on a nomadic lifestyle. It could turn into a challenge, which may be fun and exciting. (Don’t think of traveling at this point.) There are many factors, which may make this journey harder than it seems to be. No one is forcing the other one.

A team with good thinking skills. Generation X would recall "Newton's Apple", but what they have learned from the show wouldn't apply to the workplace. (Not all offices are laboratories.) It's problem solving and decision making, which would be asked during a job interview. It hardly matters if the applicant is a college graduate or someone with years of (working) experience, as life happenings could be used as samples (to be noticed). Both traits could determine which employees would be promoted. You won’t get further ahead, though.

Sense of humor. Reruns of "The Office" would help you, but it’s not about the show. Christmas follows Thanksgiving, which means a hectic time (of the year). There won’t be any shortage of short fuses, and you must not be one of those professionals. It should be the best time to know more about patience and resilience. If you’re one of those professionals who possess both traits, then show more of it.

The Importance of Positive Reinforcement

In the real world, you won’t get a trophy for participation. Not everyone would appreciate what you achieve for yourself (or have done for others). And the professional world could be a cold place to those who show compassion and understanding. In other words, gratitude must not be expected. There are other means of getting positive reinforcement, though. You can tell the good (and bad) news to your family and friends. (They can act as a shock absorber, and they won’t mind at all.) You can plan your holiday (if you earn it). And don’t think too much about the recognition. A good workplace must come first and foremost.
