Common resume mistakes that you need to avoid

For every good resume you see, there are plenty of bad resumes too. Many recruitment and employment professionals find resumes that have plenty of potential, but are let down by the same mistakes again and again. This article provides some of the most common resume mistakes that job seekers make.

Outlining duties and not performance and accomplishments

Many poor resumes focus on what duties have been achieved in previous job roles and in education. A resume should not focus on duties, but rather accomplishments and abilities. This means you should never include ‘my duties included’ or any similar term. After all, employers are not looking for candidates who can simply do a number of work duties and functions, but who are able to achieve.

The resume does not stick to the point

It is absolutely crucial that your resume has a clear focus. Employers spend very little time scanning over resumes when they look for new job candidates, and a resume that meanders aimlessly will be thrown away immediately. You can make your resume more focused by beginning sentences with action verbs, and by using personal statements which clearly outline in a single statement what you have to offer.

Not using bullet points or other formatting

A resume is given much more clarity and focus with good use of formatting, and bullet points are the best way to do this. Bullet points should be used to list short sentences, and never make each point longer than a few sentences.

Resume has no individual style

Your resume is your chance to show the employer who you are, and relying on standard templates found online is not a good way to do so. Experiment with your own structures and document templates until you find something unique that looks good, has functionality, and tells the employer something about yourself.

Including the most important information at the bottom

Your best information needs to be clear and obvious, put at the start of the resume where it can be seen quickly. Do not bury such information within text or leave it at the bottom.
