Which is more important: Talent or hard work?

You were a legend in your hall. You were a walking encyclopedia in history, which helped you and your housemates won a few friendly games. Your tutor was impressed at you after reading your admissions essays. It was a comparative analysis on your favorite Young-adult (YA) books, and she thought you had a gift for written expression. You tried to play it down, but you couldn't helped but be thrilled at her initial assessment of you. Last but not the least, you were good in useless trivia. In short, you were a talented student.

You were about to complete your degree in a few months, and you weren't worried about the immediate future. You have to deal with your thesis, not to mention the sleepless nights that would go with it. Besides, you were confident of your chances whatever the (career) options would be. But your tutor warned you not to too sure of yourself. She would point out the virtue of hard work. It reminded you of a young lad in a Dickens novel, who worked so hard at an early age. If not for his good heart, then he might not have a happy ending. Attitude would be another thing, though.

You have a deadline to beat, but you wondered about talent and hard work. It should be hard work or talent. Which one is more important? You asked some people about it, and came up with interesting responses. Here they are:

Your tutor thought one wouldn't be enough. Your tutor haven't met a student as gifted as James Joyce. Not that she met the author in person, but she couldn't have enough of "Ulysses". It broke your heart. (And you thought she had high regards of you. She might have to wait for your first book.) This was what set the English Department from the other departments in the university, as students must keep on reading and writing until their final month on their final year. This won't guarantee another author like Joyce, but the writing will be fine enough. And she was certain that it could helped them find a job.

You can count on your housemates, who choose talent over hard work. You knew the answer, but you don't mind hearing it one more time.

Your parents have a gentle reminder. Your father told you that you were lucky to have technology to assist you. (He scolded you for taking it granted at times.) You were about to tell him that he forgot what was it liked to be young, but you didn't want to interrupt him. He might mention your next holiday, but he didn't. (You went to Dubrovnik a few summers ago.) Your mother described you as a spoiled child. You were defensive, though. They didn't answer your question, but the gentle reminder would be enough.

You thought talent and hard work would be equally important in your field, but it could be hard work in the long run. You sensed that talent would give you a slight advantage, which would be a comforting thought.
