To Idle or Not To Idle

It was during your first year in the university when you learned about the virtue of idleness. In fact, it was James Norman Hall who argued that loafing was a productive moment for writers. He should knew, as he had all the time (while charting the open sea). On the other hand, you had your own room. Not that it wasn't uncomfortable, but there were days when it was raining cats and dogs. You wanted to go out for a walk, but you could only look outside. And then you imagined your last holiday in Marseilles. It was a scorching afternoon, and you tried to keep up with your parents. And then you bumped into a familiar face. She spent her third year in your department, and you wanted to know her more. You were embarrassed when your mother smiled knowingly at you.

You were back to the present, where dark sky would greet your morning. You had a deadline, but you figured out that a few hours of loafing won't hurt. And your mind wandered from the last party you attended to a game of football. It also dawned on you that you haven't done any leisure reading during the last few months. There were many things to do, and you thought you could catch up after the term.

To idle or not to idle, and there would be one answer in the workplace. But what if your colleague caught you not doing anything. You could come up with reasonable excuses. This won't let you off the hook, but you wanted to prove that you were productive like anyone else. These were the excuses you thought of:

You were preparing for the busy hours in the office. You could see yourself as a battery, except you don't have a charger. Sleep would be an ideal option, but it won't be possible. (There were many items in your do list.) You tried to imagine yourself playing the guitar and singing (in a low voice). You don't mind your colleague giving you a disapproved look.

You were overwhelmed. It could be the workload, but you would cite your last holiday. You were dead tired from walking the cobbled streets, not to mention the places of interest. (You were about to call it a day, but your mother reminded you that it would be a waste of money not to go for it.) Besides, you don't want to be thought as incompetent.

You thought it was Friday. You were thinking of what to do on a Friday night. It could be the perfect time to drop by the movie theatre. (Nothing like a popcorn flick to forget the long day.) You also thought of calling your former housemates, as you haven't seen them for ages. How about your inbox, where you might receive an e-mail from your brother. (You envy him for backpacking in India for a month.) Saturday might be the best time to go around the neighborhood. You really needed a stroll, which would help you not think of the following week. You must visit your parents on Sunday, if not call them.

It was past five in the afternoon. Better finish what must be done right away.
