Magic Yawn: 5 Steps to a Good Night's Sleep

It was Sunday, and you must go to bed early. The next day would be the start of a working week, and you wanted to be in high spirits. You hit the sack at 10 PM, only to toss and turn an hour later. You needed a magic yawn. Don't worry, as you weren't the only one who had the same predicament.

Some would call it insomnia, while others were looking for ways to get a good night sleep. If you were reading this post from your iPad, while lying in your bed, then this won't be a good start. Unless your eyes were getting heavy and the gadget was about to slip from your fingers. Better read this on the couch before you hit the sack. Here are five ways:

Look for distraction. You were taught to count sheep when you were a child, but you have outgrown it. Why not be creative? It can be geography. (A is for Australia, B is for Brazil, C is for Canada,... you'll figure out the rest of the alphabet before you fall asleep.) A language quiz is another option. (Ten one-syllable words that rhymes with SLEEP.) Movie trivia. (Recalling the Best Picture Oscar winners might keep you awake.) Expect to get tired of it. You are drowsy before you know it.

Keep the lights off. You ended up sleeping, with the lights on, on a number of occasions. But it happened in the university. There were deadlines to beat, and you were exhausted at the end of day. (It was nighttime, but you saw the first rays of light when you were about to go to bed. You could have pen a poem on dawn, but there was another deadline to beat.) You learned your lesson, so you switched off the lights. But it would remind you of the Sandman. It brought back nightmares from childhood past.

Resist the alcohol. Those days of guzzling and passing out may be over, but it doesn't mean you couldn't turn down an invitation (for a beer or two). You believed you could handle the situation, but it was hard to resist the urge. Your coursemates, whom you haven't seen for ages, wanted to relive your younger days. And it happened on a Thursday night.

Do a mental list. The laundry, which you didn't do yesterday. (You had a great time with your friends on a Friday night.) You didn't visit the gym for three straight weeks. (You woke up late.) A meeting at the office. (You're nervous, but you look forward to it.) And then you give up thinking. You want shuteye.

If this list can't help you, then lie down and close your eyes. Let your mind wander somewhere. And then you would recall what your mother always told you. She needed her granny nap.
