Life Begins at 50

Changing careers is not uncommon, especially in their late 20s. It will be another thing if you're approaching middle age. For instance, you've been part of the education sector for more than ten years, and you feel undervalued and overworked. Is it too late to put yourself out there? It depends on the situation.

The right attitude will keep you focused and determined. This means looking at your predicament in a very thoughtful way. Here's how it goes:

Don't see yourself competing with younger applicants. There's no doubt that you're better qualified than the younger applicants. You don't see yourself competing with them, though. You should be hired because you're older (and most qualified for the job). You must know the company well enough, such that you must be able to specify a skill or two that you have the knowledge and experience. It helps if you have the expertise, but don't be too assured of your chances. Ageism is still upheld in many companies, yet there's no harm in trying.

It's time to reveal your unusual interests. You're different from the rest of the applicants, so it's time to think out of the box. Don't be coy about your passion, as this is about making yourself known. If you still have contacts (who still remember you), then you must refresh your resume. Keep in mind that technology would change the job market on a frequent basis, so try to be up to date. If you're an English major, then you might be apprehensive about diminishing options. Be flexible. Look for other job openings. It may not be related to your field, but authorship is one of your goals. This is what you really want to do. Who says it's not possible to do it by the side?

Go for it. This is about trusting your instincts. If you think a change of environment will be good for you, then don't have second thoughts. You may be hired right away. It could take months before you receive a job offer. It will be better if you don't look at your younger applicants prior to the (job) interview. (It might have a demoralizing effect on you.) Be confident, as this will give your would-be employers a positive impression of you. Last but not the least, don't give up.

The above won't guarantee a successful career change, but you must not have doubts in your abilities. Ageism can put lots of restrictions on those who feel their age, but this is the right time to stand out from the crowd. Tell yourself that old age is the reason for hiring you.
