How to motivate your employees

Motivation seems easier said than done. You must be able to know everyone, which won't be possible in a workplace. It can happen, though. If you have tasks to be accomplished, then you must observe your colleagues. There's no need to know intimate details, as you only need to find out their motivation. This is expected from someone in charge.

You don't have to watch "The Office" or any TV shows related to work. (What you would learn could be valuable, though. It's also putting yourself on their good side. A professional setting is the unspoken rule, but a harmonious environment will be better. And don't discount informal gatherings. It won't take long to figure out that there are different types of employees, where classification is based on their motivation. (You read it again, so there should be no doubt about it.) Get ready to take mental notes. Let's take a closer look:

Buddy. You learned that the workplace won't be an ideal place to build friendship, but some people will think otherwise. And you can't argue with them. As a matter of fact, you should admire companies that have strong team ethos. If you don't have one, then it's not too late to install one. Social activities will make them feel supported. There should be events that will promote corporate social responsibility. Don't forget to ask their opinion, as this will give them an impression of how valuable they are.

Builder. This type of employee prefers goals, where financial reward goes to the best performer. It won't be farfetched to compare this individual to an athlete, who learns to embrace the competitive spirit. Motivation won't be an issue. (Apartment in a few years. Car in five years or more. Accessories afterwards.) Make your visions clear to this kind of colleague, putting emphasis on the monetary rewards. (It can be promotion.) You must not have second thoughts on organizing sporting activities, as this will ensure the competitive spirit burning.

Creator. There will be employees who won't fancy long routine. They prefer originality, if not embrace creativity. And you shouldn't discourage it.

Defender. This one likes routine. You must not be confused about it, as this kind of employee is looking for a company with a track record. It will be stability, where you must update this individual with good news (about the company). It may get trite in the long run, but you shouldn't think that way. This is the kind of motivation that you need to apply to this type of employee. There's no doubt about it.

Star. Contrary to what you think, this type of employee seeks affirmation from colleagues. They like to do their best, and you should make sure that everyone (in the office) will see the recognition. This is not to incite jealousy, not rivalry either. If this can motivate the others, then it will be better for everyone.

If you can't identify with anyone on the above, then tell us something about yourself.
