Does a university degree help you get a job?

Of course.

You're getting tired of this question. There's no doubt about it, even if you have a part-time job. (And you're not worried about incurring debt. Education is an investment.) Besides, you don't want to disappoint your parents. You happen to be an English major, which will give you many (career) options. You can see yourself teaching Cinema and Modernism. On the other hand, you're hoping it's not Modern literature. (You're not a huge fan of Joseph Conrad. You didn't like "Lord Jim" at all.) It's a great achievement, but you wonder if this also applies in other fields.

It depends on the situation. You got this response from a few students, who don't belong to the English Department. You were surprised when you first heard it, which prompted you to ask your tutor. He gave you a thoughtful look, which you don't like at all. (He wanted to be a painter, but he didn't have the courage to pursue his passion.) He didn't want you to be distracted for the rest of the day, so he gave you a few things to think about. These were the things you learned from him:

A degree will give you an advantage over the others, but you will learn many things in the work place. If you're thinking of working in a corporate world, then a degree won't be enough. You will learn new skills, which will turn you into a better professional. And your tutor would warn you not to brag about your degree. Make no mistake that it will be the highlight of your life, but it doesn't mean you're better than the rest.

Some don't have a degree, yet they manage to exceed everyone's expectations. These individuals won't be exceptions. They have their reasons, which might disappoint their family. But they have something to prove for themselves. They were determined. And they turned out to be a notch better. (Someone mentioned Benjamin Franklin, but you weren't sure of it.) This doesn't mean you should give serious thoughts on being a (college) dropout. On the contrary, this must inspire you to do well.

The office is like the university. It will dawn on you that the work place is like the university, but you must have a sense of urgency. Some tasks will make you dead tired, but you don't mind at all. Your hard-earned salary makes you feel good, but there'll come a point when it's no longer about the money. You'll assess yourself after learning (and mastering) a particular skill. And you'll do it again (and again). You must have a life, so you'll indulge in your interests. (You don't want to lost touch with your coursemates.) This one don't have a time period.

You thanked your tutor for these insights, which kept you from finishing your paper. But the deadline won't be tomorrow.
