6 ways to lighten up the workplace

It would take you ten years before you figure out that you won't find happiness in the workplace, right? Let's hope it's shorter.

All of us need a job to pay the bills. It's a different scenario with a household with children. There will be a few who find fulfillment in what they do, and they really mean it. Those who insist that they are happy in the workplace may be telling the truth. It's hard to tell, as routine does have an effect on people. Expect a change in mood, which can affect relationships. Someone will wonder if there's more to life. Sadly, there isn't. It doesn't mean that the future will be reminiscent of a dystopian novel.

There's a need to lighten up the workplace. Let's look at it at both ways. Here's what an employee should do:

Plan your holiday. There's no need to travel thousands of miles, and post images of exotic destinations on social media. It can be a neighboring community with places of interest. Catching up with your family (or friends) will do. Budget is not an issue, as it's more important not to be reminded of work.

Think of sports. You've been keeping yourself updated with the latest news on the UEFA Euro for more than a year, and you have good reasons. (You can't travel to France, which is fine. You're not the only one.) You can also look forward to the Olympics without being apprehensive about the Zika virus. (You don't need to tell anyone that you'll go to Rio, even if you don't have plane tickets. And you'll never buy one.) This doesn't mean thinking of possible excuses to miss work. (You don't have to feign illness.) It might be arranged to watch a game (or part of it) during your break.

Prioritize your interests, even your relationships. You have something to look forward to outside the office. There are people whose lives revolve around the workplace. This can be possible, as they have a family to raise. But keep in mind that money isn't everything. You don't know what you might be missing.

If you happen to be the boss, then keep in mind the following:

Get to know your people. You must know their skills and talents that can be valuable to the company. Don't forget to know their needs. This is how you can sustain teamwork.

Heed Richard Branson's words of wisdom. Have you tried to let your people work in their own way? Trust may be an issue, but you have nothing to lose. It might turn out that this approach will yield better results. As long as you're depending on them, even believing in their talents.

You must celebrate success. It doesn't mean a grand party. It also doesn't have to be huge achievements. Small ones deserve merit, a mention at least. Champagne will do. It can have an impact on their personal lives, so don't take it for granted.

If you happen to be a basketball fan, the third game of the NBA Finals is next. Nothing will stop you from talking about it.
