Interviews a really just a sales pitch

If you are nervous then you are not sending out enough CVs. You should be sending out 20 CVs per week. It should gain you a few interviews, which should help you to improve your interview technique. If you are sending out enough CVs then you will be having enough interviews to be sure that you are a smooth as a horse’s nose when you go for your next interview.


Your interview is a sales promotion. Terms like “tell us about yourself” are your opening to start a great sales pitch. You are selling yourself in this interview. Therefore, with a view to selling, you should be telling them certain things, such as:


  • What is great about you?
    Example = I am diligent, hard-working and very attentive to detail. I have not had a sick day in the last two years and have never been disciplined by any member of staff at work. I have no criminal record, have never been fired and have never had any brushes with drugs.

  • Why do you want the job?
    Example = I am a very keen and hard worker, and don’t like the idea of throwing my time away, so that I look back in ten years and regret it. I searched around for a job that I feel I would really enjoy, which will allow me to progress and advance, and found you.

  • What makes you the right person for the role?
    Example = I have X amount of (relevant) qualifications and X amount of (relevant) experience. Plus I took the time to research the role and find out more about the job, and I feel I am fully capable of the role. I know that it will be a lot of hard work, but I am fully aware of work involved and am up for the challenge.


Keep in mind that this is a sales pitch to all of the interviewees. You will often find that one interviewer is more talkative than the other. Never the less, you must answer each question to all people. This can be done in various ways. Let’s say that one person asks you a question, and you start to answer. Start with making eye contact with the person asking the question, then make eye contact and continue to answer with the other person(s), and end your answer/statement back with the person who asked the question.
